If you need to replace a part on a shower faucet to stop a leak or repair damage, you must know what type of faucet it is. It also helps to know the brand name of the faucet manufacturer, as each brand has different parts for repair. Finding out the type and brand requires some skill and perseverance, but the job becomes much easier when you know where to look. You will need very few tools and about 10 minutes to complete the job.
Step 1: Determine the number of handles
Assess the tap to determine how many handles it has. If it has two handles, it is a two-handle tap, which means that the hot and cold water pipes are connected to separate handles. If it has one handle, it is a single-handle tap. If the tap has three handles, it is the rare three-handle model. The third handle acts as a diverter, projecting the water to the shower head or bath unit.
If there is no handle, but rather a series of buttons on a large panel, then the tap is a panel shower. The most common type of shower tap available today is the single-handle tap, which allows you to adjust the temperature as well as the water flow with one hand.
Step 2: Identifying the manufacturer
Look for the brand name or manufacturer's symbol in the centre of the decorative panel behind the shower handle. If you see a "K", the mixer is a Kohler product; the "M" stands for Moen. American Standard, Delta and Price Pfister will usually have their names all over the tap itself. It is important to know the brand to be able to take it apart for repair or replacement.
Step 3: Check the connections
Look at the shower above the tap handle and check how it is connected to the water pipe. If there is a hose running from the showerhead to the shower pipe behind it, then you have a handheld shower. If the shower is mounted directly to the shower pipe that runs down the wall, then you have a fixed or mounted shower. Fixed showers can usually be turned about 180 degrees, while handheld showers are more flexible and easier to use.
Step 4: Identify the massage or pulsating function
Check the surface of the showerhead for the manufacturer's name or symbol, then look for the different spray patterns in the showerhead to indicate the massage or pulsating function. Look for the buttons on the side of the handle to show the control panel for the massage and pulsation functions of the shower.
Step 5: Observe the flow of water
Point the shower head away from you and towards the shower area. Turn on the tap and press the button on the shower handle. If you see a separate stream of water flowing from the shower, then you have a pulsating or massaging shower.
Step 6: Putting it all together
List all the features you find along with the brand name to find out what type of shower mixer you have. If you are considering a replacement then it is worth taking the time to research and analyse your options.
